so much for being back

I've already missed a couple days. Although, I seem to eat the same thing nearly every day so it would just be a repeat post anyway.

This past weekend was a splurge, food-wise.

Saturday was gorgeous sunshine, so Jane and I rode out to UBC to do some of the trails. Not 5 minutes into the ride, just as I was nagging her to have her brake pads replaced, Jane broke her derailleur on a rather harmless looking twig. Our attempts to patch it unsuccessful, she jogged with the bike as I pedalled slowly along the trail behind her.

The ride was basically an excuse to eat anyway, so we found a cafe with a couple of sunny outside tables. I had a clubhouse sandwich - crispy bacon, crunchy lettuce and loads of mayo, yum! - and stole hashbrowns off Jane's plate.

finally friday

A whole day and a half without writing - so much for my conviction to write again. Although, I did some cathartic stream-of-consciousness scribbling in my new journal last night, which really is the better of the two outlets.

I slept through the alarm again today, or rather - the radio went off at 6:30 as usual, but I didn't become conscious 'til nearly 8 am. Managed to get myself together and leave by 9, which was a slight improvement over my gradual sloppy decline.

Breakfast - smoothie with banana, soy, yogurt, raspberries and blueberries. Organic rye toast with strawberry jam.

Yesterday breakfast - oats, berries, almonds and soy milk for breakfast. Slice of unidentifiable loaf at the John Watson session at Michael J Fox theatre.

Lunch - fettucine frutti di mare, at l'Artista with Rob and Jason, my boss.

Dinner - a couple pieces of rye toast and cherry jam, then later on, a stir-fry - peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, onion and spinach, with grilled chicken and my own sauce - sesame oil, garlic chili and soya sauce.

Snacks - several chunks of Toblerone throughout the day.

Weighed myself this morning, and was really excited when the number on the scale was 113. In reality, it's 113 +5 pounds 'cause the cheap crappy scale doesn't really work, but I prefer seeing the lower number and adding 5. Getting off the scale, I noticed that it was a couple pounds out, in the scale's favour. Still, all in all I'm holding steady at 115-ish. Which feels just right.

yummy yogurt

5:30 snack - banana, yogurt and cinnamon. Resisted the urge to sprinkle sugar on top.

back to day one

Breakfast this morning, once I managed to drag my body out of the sofabed I've been camped out on - smoothie with raspberries, blueberries, banana, yogurt and soy. And the usual soy latte, of course.

Snack - a chunk of Toblerone, my giant Valentine's gift from Kiki

Lunch - Ultra-salty penne with white sauce and itty bitty scraps of veggies, courtesy of Chef Pastaria.

Snack 2 - Steel-cut oats and buttermilk, topped with raspberries, blueberries, a packet of brown sugar, and some toasted almonds and pumpkin seeds.

i'm back!

Two days of drinking this past weekend, coupled with the lingering noxious fumes from my newly varnished parquet floors and freshly painted walls and trim, have rendered me lethargic and stupid. I've been flattened for two days; I slowly emerge from the fog each afternoon, only to slip back into a near-coma every evening after inhaling the fumes that lurk in my apartment.

Despite this weekend's fall off the wagon, my decision earlier this year to cut back on mindless social drinking has stuck. Once I got past the first couple weeks, wondering why anyone would voluntarily give up anything as yummy as a crisp glass of gewurtz or a frosty flirtini, I noticed that somehow, the world was brighter, and my snug jeans had become loose fit. On top of these happily unexpected developments, I also had considerably more cash left in my wallet after an evening out. All of a sudden, winter seemed much less gloomy.

And today, after months of neglect, I stumbled over my blog - just as I'm searching for a safe outlet to renew my writing. I'm more interested than ever in healthy eating, and the effects of what we choose as fuel for our bodies. Mundane as the subject matter may be, it'll be my outlet of choice. Until I get distracted, anyway.
